NEY CARE
Ney Care and Possible Problems
Ney is made from Kargı reed and naturally the main material used is cellulose-based. Even though the hollowed-out Kargi reed is a hard material, it is an instrument that, like all other instruments, must be stored with certain precautions taken into consideration.
The main complaints are the change in the sound of the Ney over time (within 1 year) or not being able to get a clear sound from the Ney.
Cellulose-based instruments are more sensitive to heat and moisture. For this reason, temperature and humidity changes in the ambient air directly affect your Ney. Excessive dryness and excessive moisture damage Ney. For this reason, the first precaution taken is to lubricate the Ney at certain intervals. An unlubricated Ney will have difficulty in producing clean sound in terms of sound quality, and since it will come into direct contact with the air, its resistance to heat and humidity will decrease and cause some damage. Even the moisture released from your breath while blowing affects your Ney. A type of fungus, which we call mold, may form on the music box and inner surface of the Ney that is exposed to moisture.
Cellulose-based material may rot over time. In ney, this usually occurs in the form of decay in the cut knots, and as a result, holes may occur at the ends of the knots under the knots.
Depending on the conditions, the ney may bend or warp. For this reason, Ney should be kept in an airy environment that is not variable in terms of humidity and temperature, not exposed to direct sun, and preferably hung upside down. It is important how you store your ney when you are not playing it.

Although it is rare, over time, for any reason, your chin may crack or accidentally break. Generally, Ney masters can repair these damages.
Change of Ney's Sound
Generally, Neyzen candidates complain over time (within 1 year) of changing the sound of Ney or getting a clean sound from Ney.
The sound change of ney is based on different reasons.

First of all, after the new Ney is opened, its sound usually gets steeper as it is blown. For this reason, Ney masters turn their Ney low by about half a sound. For this reason, when you look at the tuner or compare it to a seated Ney, you may complain that this Ney is worse, but this is a must-have. A newly opened Ney finds its full sound and tone only after 1 year. If it is still bad, the masters fine tune these Neys again.

Another problem is that over time, a wheezing sound comes from Ney or a sound cannot be produced. This situation usually occurs in Ney's that are not oiled. Heat and Humidity affect Ney's structure. Ney's should be lubricated at certain intervals in order to minimize its contact with the air and keep the current humidity rate more constant. On the other hand, poor quality oil or dusty environment will also affect Ney's voice. Especially the layer of oil and dirt that accumulates and solidifies on the inner surface can change the sound of your Ney or cause you to not be able to hear any sound. You can see this topic under the title How to Oil Ney.

Sudden temperature changes can also cause you to not get the sound you want from your Ney. Neyzens generally warm up their Ney by blowing for a short time before performing a performance.
